I am so excited to share this DIY post with all of you!
Have you ever seen something and wanted to replicate it for your home?
Until you thought about it and, realized it’s probably too expensive or difficult.
Well, this is not one of those times!
I am about to tell | show you how I FINALLY got this look; Without breaking the bank.
This website [Listed above] is about to change your life!
This company is one of my all-time favorites for DIY projects.
Ranging from backsplash, floor tiles, wallpaper, decals, etc. They have it all!
For this home improvement project, I utilized their “peel & stick” floor pops.
Yes, you read that right, PEEL AND STICK tiles!
For this project you will need a few house hold tools | items.
- Scissors
- Contour Gauge
- This is not a necessity but it definitely helps.
- Caulk | Caulking Gun
- Putty Knife
- Floor Pop Tiles
First, you need to select your tiles!
I know what your thinking…
How can these stick and be that great of quality? Can I put them over my current flooring? Will it damage the floors I have now?
-Every thought that kept going through my head
If you’re struggling with these questions; You’re in the right place. Not-to-worry; This blog post is going to cover everything girl!
You just worry about how cute your new space is going to be.
- Current Sale: $1.35/ Sq Ft.
- Normal: $1.80/ Sq Ft.
I don’t know about you but, for me, the price per square foot is not how I prefer to calculate | understand what I am purchasing. Sooo….
- Current Sale: $13.49
- Normal: $17.99
The prices shown above are for one box of ten, 12″x12″ tiles.
- Total Investment: I Spent $49.63 total on 3 boxes of tile, caulk and, my contour gauge. [Again not required | I did a lot of the room without this tool]
Wallpops runs sales super frequently; Which is one reason they are so amazing, in my book. Just keep your eyes peeled if they aren’t on sale at the time you read this. However, they’re normal price is still AMAZING!
These images display my before and after pictures.
Before you begin, be sure to clean your floors well; Because YES they can be placed directly on top of your current tile and no they don’t damage your original flooring!
Which means, if you ever want to change these out…
When your style changes or if one day you decide to sell and, you need a “seller neutral” look…
You can take these up and have the FREEDOM to change your look all over again!
Use your putty knife to gently pull-up | loosen your quarter round.
This will allow you to easily slide the floor tile under your base board; Giving you a more seamless look.
I would do this little-by-little; In the area I was about to work on.
Once you have the quarter round lifted | loosened up a bit; Select your tile.
Slide the edge under your base board; Just enough to keep the edge out of plain sight.
As you can see in the image above, I chose to start in a corner zone. For me, this was easier because I could lay more of my tiles without having to cut a lot.
Peel off the backing and start laying down your succeeding tiles!
Pay close attention to the design line-up.
If it isn’t a great line-up then rotate your next tile to see if another side fits your look better.
Continue this process until you get to the point where you have to start cutting tiles. This part can be challenging and does require some patience.
I recommend cutting these tiles little-by-little for a couple of reasons.
- This will ensure your tiles fit together as closely as possible. Giving you a more seamless look and minimizing any gaps in you design.
- This will ensure you don’t waste a tile by cutting it incorrectly | saving you more money [Woohoo!! Yes, girl!- All the savings!].
So, the straight edge cuts are not that difficult. However, cutting around the door frames and toilet area can be more challenging.
I free-hand cut a few tile pieces and it looked fine. I just touched it up with some caulking at the end.
Then, Jay surprised me by going to get me this AMAZING | game changer tool!
This is called a contour gauge.
It works by moulding to whatever shape you press it against.
I would then, trace the design on top of my tile, in pencil. Once you have your shape just cut on the line. This made my process…
- Faster
- Easier
- More Exact| Seamless
This tool was so helpful and I know we will use it on multiple other DIY projects; Not-to-mention, it was only $10.88! However, if you are looking to save more money, you do not have to use a contour gauge.
Yayy!! You’re doing great and almost done; EKKK!!
Let me start this next step by saying…
Caulking is a dirty | messy business.
-Yours truly
This is an image of my caulking gun | caulk itself.
This step is necessary because, I don’t know about you but, I am striving for perfection.
Well, as close as I can get anyway.
Caulking is what gives you that seamless | finished look!
These images below will show you the difference I am talking about.
I caulked any side area that didn’t look clean cut and seamless. Such as…
- Around the Toilet
- Around The Bath | Shower Area
- Around Any Door Frame Imperfections
All you need to do is, squeeze the desired amount into the gap you are wanting to rid yourself | gorgeous new flooring of.
Next, you will wipe away any excess caulk, in order to smooth out your edging. You can do this with…
- A Rag
- Your Finger
- Towel
This is going to get messy! Take your time and anticipate the need to not allow this to get on your tiles. It is sticky and can be difficult to get off. Now, sit back and let it dry!
All you need to do now is clean up, decorate and, enjoy!
I will say, this is not a “high end” expensive option. These are vinyl tiles and as much as I LOVE THEM; They are not as nice as real stamped tile. However, they are a great alternative and I love that they can be changed out at a later date. The price was right for me and I am so happy with the finished product!
I hope this helps anyone looking for a cost effective DIY floor remodel and as always, if you have any question please reach out!
